Caution – do not upgrade to version 8 if you use Wi-Fi sync to your desktop
I have used and liked SplashID for many years, but lately the focus has been less on stability and quality and more on pushing their cloud services.
IMPORTANT — The Whats New (release notes) section does not make this clear, but in version 8 you must pay a "one-time" upgrade fee to retain the local WiFi sync functionality. (It was included in version 7.) If you use this functionality and are not prepared to pay more, do not upgrade beyond version 7.2.6.
They are trying to change their business model from selling one-time software licenses to a subscription software-as-a-service model, with annual payments. I find this very annoying. (I think there is some kind of lifetime upgrade fee with includes WiFi sync and the Pro cloud functionality for $40, but iTunes lists Wi-Fi Sync as an in-app purchase option for $30. Its all very confusing, but it appears that at a minimum you will be paying $30 to retain this functionality.) Im not impressed.
I might be more forgiving if the app had been rock solid the last couple of years, but its been a bit flaky, and my patience is wearing thin.
I may update this review in the future if things improve.
